Singing for the Lord

Psalm 100: 1-2 (King James)  Make a joyful noise unto the Lord, all ye lands. Serve the Lord with gladness; come before his presence with singing.

When I retired from teaching general music at elementary schools,  I still had the desire to create music. There had been a Senior Citizen Choir at the church I attend, but it no longer existed. I spoke with the Senior Pastor and he said he had prayed for someone to revitalize this ministry. This was meant to be. Therefore in August of 2006 I became the director of the Golden Heirs Choir. We started with 12 members. I went to all of the Adult Bible Fellowship Classes and encouraged them to join the choir. Each year the choir has grown. There are currently 40 members on the roster.
Our mission is to share the love, joy, and peace of God through song and fellowship. The choir is a local outreach ministry to assisted living and nursing homes in the Knoxville area.  During our singing season, we do 23 programs between September and May. We sing the wonderful traditional hymns and fun songs from the 1920’s – 1960’s. We encourage residents to sing with us. It  is a sweet sound to hear the residents sing. Sometimes the residents are unable to sing, but their smiling faces or eyes are expressing  joy and singing in their hearts. After we sing, we always greet and talk with the residents. Music brings many special memories to the residents.
The choir members have become friends. We share the happy and sad times together. There is always laughter at every rehearsal. Wonderful stories of God’s love for us have been shared during the inspirational moment given by a member each week. God has truly blessed this ministry.
