“And suddenly there came a sound from heaven, as of a rushing mighty wind, and it filled the whole house where they were sitting.” Acts 2:2 NKJ
I must confess that I have not always fully given the Holy Spirit the credit and respect I now feel it deserves. It always seemed to be a dangling appendage of the Trinity—that third wheel. And now another confession: Pentecost was June 9th…and it flew right past me with not even a nod in its direction!!! But my daily Bible readings have been in Acts, and some of the verses seemed to leap off the pages and touch my heart…which caused me to do some deep thinking. I believe that if I could step into any event in the Bible as a participant, that Pentecost would be one of my picks. I can only imagine being in a large room with other believers…and hearing a mighty wind approaching–and then being filled with HIS SPIRIT. Acts 2: 1-12 offers 3 insights:
1) The Holy Spirit is BOLD: the Holy Spirit arrived uninvited, and He came rushing in like a mighty wind..boldly. In like manner, Hebrews 4:16 tells us, “Let us therefore come boldly to the throne of grace” –which means we can use that same boldness in approaching God.
2) The Holy Spirit is ASSURANCE: the very presence of the Holy Spirit within us is our assurance that we possess the Spirit of Christ. Before Jesus ascended to His Father after the resurrection, He told the disciples, “I will not leave you comfortless…” (John 14:18). So the Holy Spirit was sent as our Comforter (peace amidst the storms), Guide (wisdom and discernment), Helper (a very present help), and Convicting Spirit (follow the promptings you receive).
3) The Holy Spirit is TRANSFORMING: He changes lives. For those present in that room on Pentecost, they were filled with the Holy Spirit and were amazed and marveled at the manifestations of the Spirit. Christian believers everywhere are filled with the Spirit, and therefore, we know we belong to Christ because His Spirit dwells in us.
